Surah Al-Balad (The City, البلد) is the 90th surah of the Noble Quran — a Meccan surah of 20 verses. Read it below in Arabic with the English translation of Marmaduke Pickthall, and listen verse by verse to famous Egyptian reciters.

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

90:1

لَآ أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ١

Nay, I swear by this city -

90:2

وَأَنتَ حِلٌّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلْبَلَدِ ٢

And thou art an indweller of this city -

90:3

وَوَالِدٍۢ وَمَا وَلَدَ ٣

And the begetter and that which he begat,

90:4

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَٰنَ فِى كَبَدٍ ٤

We verily have created man in an atmosphere:

90:5

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌۭ ٥

Thinketh he that none hath power over him?

90:6

يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًۭا لُّبَدًا ٦

And he saith: I have destroyed vast wealth:

90:7

أَيَحْسَبُ أَن لَّمْ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ ٧

Thinketh he that none beholdeth him?

90:8

أَلَمْ نَجْعَل لَّهُۥ عَيْنَيْنِ ٨

Did We not assign unto him two eyes

90:9

وَلِسَانًۭا وَشَفَتَيْنِ ٩

And a tongue and two lips,
